Perth locals Claire and Hamish married in their dream destination of Broome, WA.
Wedding date: August 3rd, 2018
Wedding location: Broome, Western Australia
Number of guests: 39
Bridal party: One bridesmaid, Best man and two flower girls
Ceremony time: from 2pm to 3pm
Reception time: from 5pm to 10:30pm
Tell us about how you met and the proposal...
We met at a bar. We became friends initially but became more later on after Hamish came back from a trip to Morocco and Spain. Hamish proposed down at Frenchman Bay in Albany. It was a stormy weekend, but he made the most of the little afternoon sunshine that appeared.
Where was the location of your wedding ceremony and reception?
The ceremony was at the Cable Beach Club, Lily pond Lawn and the reception was at the Cable Beach Club, Okari Deck.
How did you find the location?
We’d been to Broome once before. It has the most relaxed vibe and the colours are amazing. When we decided on a destination wedding, we knew it would have to be Broome.
During the planning of your wedding how many times did you visit the location?
Once a few months before the wedding.
What was the theme of your wedding?
We didn’t really have a theme, we just wanted to celebrate Broome and the amazing colours of the blue water and red dirt. We found some amazing aerial shots of Broome and used them for the theme of our invites, menus, etc
How easy or hard was it to plan your wedding?
It was easy, thanks to the talented Wedding planner at Cable Beach, April Bersabe. She took care of everything on the day and that meant that everything ran smoothly and to plan.
Where did the majority of your guests stay?
Cable Beach Club Resort.
Did you have an itinerary or planned activity for guests on either side of the wedding?
Yes, as most of our guests hadn’t been to Broome before, we made a little “Things to do and see in Broome” flyer for them.
What advice would you give a couple planning a destination wedding in this location?
Enjoy every second of it!
What did you like about having a destination wedding?
I loved having all our closest friends and family together for a week. Family is very important to Hamish and I. Having everyone make the journey up to celebrate our love was the most amazing feeling.
What was your favourite part of your wedding day?
I absolutely loved the surprise and anticipation of what our first dance would be. Hamish and I made our own playlist of our favourite songs. As we had an hour of cocktails and canapes before the reception started, we created a playlist of old swing/jazz music. We hadn’t decided on a first dance song so we play ‘russian roulette’ on the day and decided that the song that was next on the playlist following our thank you speech to be our song. Turned out it was “All Night Long” by Lionel Richie. We had not practised our dance moves either so although a little nerve-wracking, it was also a lot of fun and a very memorable moment.
What advice would you give someone else planning a destination wedding?
Make sure you have a connection to the destination. Not only was Broome amazing but, Hamish fake proposed to me on Cable Beach years ago and I’ve always held that as a crappy yet hilarious memory of Broome.
Did you have guest gifts?
Yes. We had little muslin bags stamped with our initials. Inside we had little sunblocks and a “pearl” personalised cookie (celebrating Broome pearls).
I last minute decided to have my two grown up cousins as my flower girls. They did such a good job and the look on their faces was beautiful.
