Tell us more about John Gehrig Wines…
If you love a winery with history, then John Gehrig Wines is for you. It’s a 5th generation family run winery, (with generation 6 assisting were they can!) established in 1860. John, a fourth generation vineron, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the fifth winemaking generation to craft some awarding wining wines from sparkling, whites, red and fortified wines. Ross has an obsession with producing the best grapes to create wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic Northeast Victorian winery.
In 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s original birthplace, Rutherglen, was too strong, so Ross with wife Meghan, have expanded to a new vineyard and cellardoor site in Gooramadda (east Rutherglen).
Why does it make such an ideal destination wedding venue?
The beautiful setting of 250 acres of vineyard gives you some stunning locations for your wedding ceremony and photos. The reception can take place in our charming heritage listed winery cellar door; and the interior design can be tailored to suit your specific wedding plans: from the traditional tables, to long lunch style or cocktail. Our venue is a rustic blank canavas awaiting your creative dreams to come true. I’m sure some of our family favourite wines will be enjoyed by your wedding guests. The region also has plenty of luxurious and relaxing accommodation options, and the days leading up to and after your wedding, guests can enjoy exploring the region. There's so much to offer!
Tell us more about yourself and your role at the vineyard…
My background is food science-quality assurance and I actually never drank wine until I married Ross nine years ago, so it has been a steep learning curve into the industry. I'm always having to wear different hats - from being a mother, to generation 6 Grace and Conrad, running 2 cellar doors (which includes regional events and weddings), to assisting with vineyard seasonal maintenance and trying my hand at winemaking (Chief Wine Taster). I'm also a key member of the bottling process/filler-operator! With the operating of a family business, you live and breathe all parts of the business. As we say
'the good, the bad, and the ugly! Though good certainly outweighs the other two….
How long has the vineyard been hosting weddings?
The first official wedding for Oxley was ours in 2009 and Rutherglen was in 2014.
What is your favourite part of what you do?
Certainly the diversity each day brings. There is never a dull moment. From meeting customers through the cellar door and hearing their stories, to showing potential couples through our beautiful vineyards for their special day and operating a grape crusher or driving a tractor cutting the grass for an upcoming event.
Why do you think couples should marry in this beautiful area of North East Victoria?
Diversity and unique locations, beautiful surroundings, passionate experienced venues/vendors, great weather! And of course an amazing food and wine culture.
Often couples are overwhelmed with the great variety of vendors to choose from for their wedding day. How can you help the couple?
We can sit down and discuss their vision and ideas and I can reach out to my wedding vendor network and see if we can make their vison become a reality. If I can’t help them directly, I’m sure one of my network friends can point us in the right direction!
Do you have any favourite moments from weddings you’ve hosted?
I always enjoy seeing the joy in the couple after the ceremony and getting positive feedback from the event we have assisted and hosted for their special day. Also watching our daughter smiling and having fun helping me to set the reception table decorations!
You are one of the star venues being highlighted at this year’s Love + Light Festival. How did this beautiful partnership come to be?
In December 2015, we were part of a styled wedding shoot and the strength of the network friendship has just grown from there. I just hope I’m not too much of a 'venuezilla' for the event as I am very passionate about this event and our venue!
What three words would you use to describe John Gehrig Wines?
Accommodating, Adaptable & Genuine
What is the process couples go through with you when planning a wedding at your vineyard?
First, we have an initial meeting on site which includes a tour and viewing of the vineyard to choose a possible ceremony area to start planning and adding clarity to the design process. Then, we give you a tasting pack of the wine you may want to enjoy at your reception that you can sample with family and friends at your leisure. Thirdly, approximately two months prior to the event, we do another final walk through to ensure we are all on the same design plan. More viewings and access to the site can occur closer to the date as required! Days prior, we give vendors access as required to set up day or night and you also have access for a run through rehearsal if required with drinks on site so family and friends can share your excitement and wedding buzz!
Can you tell us about the wedding packages you offer?
We offer a separate ceremony and reception package or a combination package and then a Winter package price for June - Aug weddings.
