For Issue 1, we introduced you to Sydney-siders Carly and Michael whose destination wedding to the NSW countryside was the best way to celebrate their love for each other. The “rustic/country” theme was executed to perfection, and was beautifully captured by candid style wedding photographer Tim Frawley.

Wedding Location: Merribee, NSW
Number of Guests: 110
Bridal Party: Three bridesmaids, one best man and three groomsmen
Ceremony Time: 3:30pm -3:45pm
Reception Time: 6pm – 11:30pm
Tell us about how you met and about the proposal…
We met through a mutual friend, although it was several years prior to us reconnecting. For the proposal, Michael got down on one knee in front of the Christmas tree in our first home together.
Where was the location of your wedding ceremony and reception and why did you choose this location?
While we're from Sydney, we decided to have our wedding in Merribee, NSW. It was the natural beauty of the gardens and landscape of Merribee that made it the perfect setting for our ceremony and then the reception was held in the barn.
What was the vibe or theme of your wedding?
How easy or hard was it to plan your wedding?
Once we learnt to delegate we found life much easier! There are so many different people providing integral services for a wedding, that trusting they are all going to create the exact picture you have built up in your mind is difficult. But they are all professionals, yours is not their first wedding, they know the day is special to you and they go out of their way to make it as memorable as possible.
Describe the reception space...
We styled the day ourselves, from the macramé, the hanging floral arrangements in the barn, the signage, the table decorations and basically all the finer, more personalised details around the property.
Did you have an itinerary or planned activities for guests on either side of the wedding?
We hosted a ‘recovery brunch’ the next day back at Merribee.
What advice would you give a couple planning a destination wedding in this location?
We were so fortunate with the weather on the day, but always have a Plan B. We used a polaroid camera to accompany our guestbook and everyone had a great time taking photos to add to their written message.
Also, organise transport to/from the wedding venue/s. Provide accommodation options for guests as far in advance as possible.
What did you like about having a destination wedding?
It was relaxed, quiet and Merribee was a ‘first time’ experience for all of our guests.
What was your favourite part of your wedding day?
We loved our ceremony. Seeing all our guests and then watching the woman I was about to marry walking down the aisle, and for Carly walking down the aisle with her dad, were magical. Our celebrant was the perfect balance of serious but fun. The whole day had a really relaxed vibe.
Is there anything you would have done differently?
Absolutely every detail was perfect, but we couldn’t have done it without a lot of help from family and friends.
