It was a sunny winter day in August when Sim and Ken married on the northern beachside of Sydney’s Whale Beach. A special day not to just celebrate their beautiful love of one another, but also the bride’s birthday. We can’t think of a more memorable way to celebrate your 30th…

How did you and Ken meet?

We actually met via the Tinder app, but our first face to face meet was at The Hunter, a little Wine bar in Mosman over the Queens Birthday long weekend back on 2014.  I instantly thought he was gorgeous & too good to be true. After less than a year of dating, ken had asked me to move in with him, then less than a year later he proposed.


Tell us about the proposal…

The weekend before I was going back to work having been on sick leave as i had an operation, Ken took me to Hugo’s manly for a romantic dinner. After a relaxing and filling meal, we went back home to Narrabeen then ken said he had a little surprise for me, asked me the Q in the comfort of our beautiful home.


Why did you choose to marry at Whale Beach?

We live in the northern beaches and love the ocean, We chose this beach because it is a little more secluded than others so it was perfect for our intimate winter beach wedding.


What was the theme of your wedding and what inspired it?

Laid back, intimate and non traditional are the best ways to describe the vibe on the day. We didn’t really have a theme we decided to keep everything simple with muted tones, nothing too colourful or bright, it really suited our style.


Why did you opt for no music during your ceremony?

We had beach ceremony and wanted to enjoy hearing the sound of the waves from the ocean.


Describe your reception…

We booked a private dining room at Pilu at Freshwater for lunch after the ceremony. We hired the Balcony Room which seats18 guests and has a private balcony with uninterrupted views of the beach. It was the perfect location to end a beautiful day, the service, food and drinks were impeccable.


What cake did you opt for?

Originally Ken said he didn’t think we needed a cake, but I had to keep something traditional so I surprised him with a small semi naked cake decorated with fresh seasonal flowers and succulents. It was coconut flavoured with vanilla buttercream filling and we ate it all!


What was your favourite moment from your wedding day?

Our celebrant Melinda had our parents email her a special message that she then read out during the ceremony which made it extra special as we didn’t know what was going to be said. Very beautiful words from both our families, a tear or two may have been shed.


Tell us about your vows…

We didn’t include traditional vows just the legal and personal ones. We started our vows with a giggle and then ended with so much love and commitment.


What are you glad you did on your wedding day and is there anything you would have changed?

I think i can speak for both Ken and myself when i say i think the best thing we decided to do on our wedding day was keep it small, with just family. All the people we loved came together and it made it so much more fun having an intimate wedding. I also had my birthday that day so it definitely was the best way to enter into my 30’s.


The greatest part about our wedding day, is we wouldn’t have changed a thing. It’s exactly how we envisioned it to be. We shared laughs and a few tears and it was the most fun I’ve ever had.
