Canadian couple Nat and Matt are lovers of the outdoors, avid hikers and wanderlust chasers, making their mountainside helicopter photoshoot the perfect way to celebrate their engagement. Their relationship has blossomed from "just friends" to long distance lovers and finally, to engaged and finally planning their overseas nuptials, sure to be an adventure, something these two thrive on.
How did you meet?
Matt and I met through mutual friends. He’s an environmental consultant and I’m a personal trainer. There was always a connection between us since the day we met; we always gravitated towards each other at every social gathering but we never pursued anything. After about 2.5 years of knowing each other, we decided to give us a try! We actually started our relationship long distance for the first 9 months, which to be honest, I have no idea how we got through considering neither of us had good experiences with long distance relationships. But we made it! Matt eventually moved back to Ontario, and we moved in together! Now another 3.5 years later, and a whole lot of adventures together, we’re engaged and getting married!
Tell us a little more about the proposal...
We spent May long weekend up North like we do every year, and it was a wonderful weekend! The weather was gorgeous, the hummingbirds were out and about, the sky at night was so clear and filled with shooting stars, and like always, we turned off our phones to enjoy each other’s company.
The morning of the proposal, Matt decided to make us breakfast, my favorite meal of the day! He set the table, got everything ready and turned on some music. I sat down the second there was food on the table and started eating without him since I was so hungry! About 5 minutes later, he asked me to turn around for a photo. I reluctantly turned around, as I did not want to take one in my sweat pants, glasses and messy bun. He took it anyway but I wasn’t even looking so I was kind of confused why we even took one. I found out later that he was actually setting up his phone to video the whole proposal!
Matt joined me at the table and started talking about everything we had experienced as a couple and how much he cares and appreciates me. For someone who doesn’t express his feelings often, I thought he was just having a moment haha! To be honest, I was so busy eating, I wasn’t really paying attention to what he was saying. At one point I was looking at his hands and noticed that they were shaking. I asked if he was ok, and he said that he was just cold. I then looked at what he was wearing and realized he was dressed up while I sat there in my pajamas. Next thing I know, he gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him! After crying for about 5 minutes, of course, I said yes! I couldn’t believe he was ready to commit to me for the rest of our lives. Best surprise ever.
Tell us how your wedding plans are coming so far...
We started planning a wedding in Toronto, but nothing ever felt right. Although we found many beautiful venues, we were looking for something unique and out of the ordinary. We didn’t feel connected to anything and there was always a compromise we weren’t willing to agree to. It also became very expensive very fast for a 150 person wedding. We soon realized that the wedding we were planning was more about everyone else than it was about us getting married. I decided to jump ship, asked Matt to go on an adventure with me, and he agreed! So here we are planning a unique destination wedding!
Where will your destination wedding be, and why did you choose that location?
Our relationship has always been about being an adventure! We love traveling, doing crazy things, getting lost and going with the flow, and hiking up trails to see breathtaking views never gets old. No matter where we are, if we’re together, we always end up having the most fun! For our wedding, we want it to reflect who we are as a couple. That said, we decided to take our closest family and friends on an adventure to Iceland, a place we’ve both wanted to explore! As for the day, it’s going to be a surprise for everyone! But we can’t wait to get married in Iceland, August 2018!
