From Tinder to Thailand, Doris and Brendan’s romantic journey has been a true modern day fairy-tale. The Sydneysiders decided a destination wedding with a “beach formal” feel would give them the relaxed vibe they were after to celebrate their nuptials, and that having the occasion in Southeast Asia would also offer their guests a fun holiday. This vibe, coupled with jaw-dropping views, helpful locals and tasty Thai cuisine, Doris and Brendan’s destination wedding well exceeded their expectations.
Wedding date: April 27th 2016
Wedding location: Koh Samui, Thailand
Number of guests: 50
Bridal Party: Four bridesmaids, one best man, three groomsmen,
one flower girl and one ring bearer
Ceremony time: 4:30pm – 5:30pm
Reception time: 6pm -11pm
Why did you choose Koh Samui as your wedding destination?
We had travelled to Thailand twice in previous years, however not to Koh Samui, and absolutely loved the idea of having a destination wedding there due to the amazing views, delicious food and friendly locals.
Where did the majority of your guests stay?
All along the main strip of Chaweng Beach.
Did you have an itinerary/activities planned for guests before or after your wedding?
We had a Facebook group where we would post our whereabouts and daily activities. We organised a post wedding private charter two days after the wedding, of which we had about 24 guests join.
How easy or hard was it to plan your wedding?
It was relatively easy once we found Creative Asia – run by an Australian ex-pat – who put us in touch with the Wedding Coordinator at Sareeraya, and all aspects were organised via email and confirmed with a Skype session. We arrived 5 days before the wedding, and found this was really helpful in getting the last minute details finalised.
Describe the reception space and décor…
The ceremony and reception were held at Sareeraya Villas & Suites, located outside with a view of the beach. We had fairy lights and lanterns, and frangipanis floating in the water for the centrepieces.
What were the details of the entertainment and music you chose?
We had a DJ for our reception and our first dance was to “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love” by Barry White. We had a 3 man fire dance show and fireworks during the reception and also had a baby elephant for photos after the ceremony.
What was your choice for wedding favours?
Wine pourers with stoppers and “XO” bottle openers. We also had favour boxes made for the children which included Play Doh, finger puppets, blowing bubbles, crayons, stickers and a customised colouring book.
What were you glad you did on your wedding day?
The entertainment was great which made it a memorable occasion for all our guests. We also took a moment, as newlyweds, to walk along the beach, take a breather, and embrace the occasion.
Is there anything you would have done differently?
We would have arrived a few days earlier.
What advice would you have for someone else planning a wedding in this location?
Parichat – our wedding coordinator at Sareeraya – was amazing! She was across all the details of the day, and nothing was ever too much trouble.
Also, we compiled a PowerPoint with all elements of our wedding to assist the venue with our vision, and we believe this worked really well to avoid any miscommunication.
